A root canal is typically performed to prevent tooth loss when there is severe damage at the root of the tooth (the pulp). The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and sealing the root, and placing a crown over the tooth for reinforcement. Crowns (or caps) are used to replace a tooth or reinforce the strength of a tooth damaged by severe tooth decay or trauma to the mouth. A crown may be used with a dental implant if you are missing a tooth. Crowns can be made of different materials including porcelain (most common), gold, or platinum metal.

If you have an empty space where a tooth should be, due to a lost tooth or tooth extraction, you may benefit from a dental bridge. The bridge is made of a filler tooth situated between two crowns. It is a permanent solution for a missing tooth.

If you have several missing teeth or extensive tooth decay or gum disease, you may be a candidate for full or partial dentures. Unlike bridges and dental implants, dentures are not permanently fixed to your jaw. They are removable. However, dentures are custom molded to fit your mouth and will require a series of adjustments to get the best fit.
